At what point does “tough leadership” become intimidation?
High standards are not the problem.
Clarity is not the problem.
Accountability is not the problem.
But fear is.
- Strong leadership is calm under pressure.
- It corrects behaviour without attacking character.
- It challenges performance without humiliating people.
Tough leadership sounds like:
- “Here’s what isn’t working. Let’s fix it.”
Intimidation sounds like:
- “If you can’t cope, maybe you shouldn’t be here.”
One builds capability. The other builds silence.
And silence is expensive.
When people stop speaking up:
• Risks go unreported
- Innovation dries up
- Talent quietly exits
- Culture erodes from the inside
Here’s the test I often give executives:
Do people challenge you safely?
Or do they edit themselves in your presence?
If your team performs only when you’re in the room — that’s control.
If they perform when you’re not — that’s leadership.
Strong leaders don’t need volume to create impact.
✅They create standards
