At what point does “tough leadership” become intimidation?

High standards are not the problem.

Clarity is not the problem.

Accountability is not the problem.

But fear is.

  • Strong leadership is calm under pressure.
  • It corrects behaviour without attacking character.
  • It challenges performance without humiliating people.

Tough leadership sounds like:

  • “Here’s what isn’t working. Let’s fix it.”

Intimidation sounds like:

  • “If you can’t cope, maybe you shouldn’t be here.”

One builds capability. The other builds silence.

And silence is expensive.

When people stop speaking up:

• Risks go unreported

  • Innovation dries up
  • Talent quietly exits
  • Culture erodes from the inside

Here’s the test I often give executives:

Do people challenge you safely?

Or do they edit themselves in your presence?

If your team performs only when you’re in the room — that’s control.

If they perform when you’re not — that’s leadership.

Strong leaders don’t need volume to create impact.
